Course Description:
This one and one-half day postgraduate course is designed to provide surgeons with the basics in ultrasound which will allow them to obtain an appreciation and working knowledge of the appropriate use of ultrasound technology in their practice. The curriculum was developed by the American College of Surgeons Ultrasound National Faculty, and is exported to SAGES and Long Island Jewish Hospital with the cooperation of the ACS. The course involves basic didactic lectures in ultrasound physics, indications, and applications as well as normal abdominal anatomy during the first morning, followed by a hands-on session using transabdominal ultrasound on human models at the end of the morning. The afternoon session involves lectures on pathophysiology and treatment applications. The second morning is another hands-on session, with participants rotating between animal models of open intraoperative ultrasound, laparoscopic ultrasound, and organ ultrasound for practice with biopsy. Participants will receive full CME category I credit as well as a certificate from the ACS documenting the experience in ultrasound offered by the course. Competence testing for participants during the course is documented by the instructors.
