Objectives:

a. To familiarize the surgeon with the critical aspects and systematic approach to manual laparoscopic suturing and intracorporeal knotting techniques

b. To expand the application of laparoscopic skills to more advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures

c. To increase laparoscopic dexterity, efficiency, and creativity

d. To troubleshoot difficult access or techniques

Who Should Attend:

a. Basic /Intermediate: for the surgeon (in practice or in training) who is experienced in laparoscopic cholecystectomies, have some exposure to or experience in advanced laparoscopic procedures and wishes to acquire proficient skills in laparoscopic surgery, anastomosis, and intracorporeal knotting techniques for reconstructive procedures.

b. Advanced: for the surgeon who is well-versed laparoscopic surgery and wishes to refine his suturing and knotting techniques.

Port placement strategy

Linear suturing (interrupted, continuous) gastrostomy or cystostomy

Enteroenterostomy

Fundoplication

Optional exercises, e.g. ligatures in continuity, purse string suture, etc.

Suturing & Intracorporeal Knotting

PORCINE LAB: demonstration & practice: Port placement strategy, Enteroenterostomy, Gastrojejunostomy, Choledochotomy, Optional exercises, e.g. pyloroplasty, etc.

Course Description:

Lecture and demonstration, followed by practice, of exercises in live porcine model of various advanced laparoscopic procedures. A review of principles and techniques will be presented as well as an overview of suturing instrumentation and suture characteristics. In addition to the live animal surgery tables, an inanimate station will also be availabe with an instructor for practice of suturing and knotting techniques on animal tissues.

Logistics:

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Garden City Hotel (until February 19, 2002), approximately 5 minutes from Winthrop University Hospital, Mineola, NY. Also, the Long Island Raiload offers direct trains from Penn Station in Manhatten (New York City) to Mineola (approx. 45-60 minute ride); the hospital is located a short walking distance from the train station.

CME Credits:

a. Basic / Intermediate: 4 hours Category 1

b. Advanced: 4 hours Category 1

c. The Microsurgery & Operative Endoscopy Training (M.O.E.T.) Institute is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
