First Time Forum for Industry
On Friday, April 20, from 11:00 to 11:30 our industry colleagues will have an opportunity to present educational information in the main session room. A limited number of companies will make brief presentations highlighting pertinent updates about their products or company. This type of forum is a first for SAGES and will provide attendees a focused communication about evolving developments in the corporate sector. Afterwards, registrants are encouraged to visit the exhibit floor before it closes at 1:00 p.m. Current company participants are: Fujinon, Inc. and Karl Storz Endoscopy America.

Sentinel Node Techniques/Oncology
SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 2001 - 2:00 - 3:15 PM
Panel Chair: Barbara Schwartzberg, MD
The sentinel lymph node technique has been proposed to be an accurate method of identifying those lymph nodes most likely to contain metastatic cancer cells. This has been well demonstrated first in melanoma and now in breast cancer patients. Use of the sentinel lymph node technique is now being explored with gastrointestinal cancers. Research is being performed which broadens the application of the sentinel lymph node concept to the field of PET scanning. Specific nuclear medicine compounds will be injected preoperatively to mark abnormalities in the body.
Panel Objectives:
At the conclusion of this panel, a participant will be able to
discuss the most up-to-date information on where the sentinel lymph node technique is heading; this will include the information on the relatively established use of the sentinel lymph nodes in the evaluation of breast cancer;
describe newer application using the sentinel lymph node technique in colon cancer;
list several new developments in pathology will be addressed with a discussion of ultrastaging techniques and their implication on outcome and survival;
understand possible future surgical applications using PET scanning, including the future broad potential of nuclear medicine in surgery.
Panelists and Topics:
BARBARA SCHWARTZBERG: SLN for BREAST
ANTON BILCHIK: SLN for Colorectal Cancer
JOHN PFEIFER: SLN Pathology, Implications of Immunoperoxidase Stains
