The Surgeon in the Digital AgeCourse Director: Steven D. Schwaitzberg, MD
Course Co-Director: Daniel M. Herron, MD
Time: 7:30 - 11:00AM
Location: America's Center
Course Description:
Registrants may attend the morning lectures only, or lectures followed by one of three afternoon sessions. This activity has been designed to develop and increase participants' knowledge, skills and performance in their service of patients, the public and the medical profession. Because of the very nature of endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery, surgeons must be well versed in video and imaging technology. This course addresses both proven methods and new technological developments in these areas. Because many surgeons teach or give lectures to colleagues, this course addresses methods to improve presentations to help participants increase the skills that they use while providing service to the medical profession. Because of the changing nature of the modern medical practice, surgeons are spending more time with paperwork and less time with patients. This course addresses computer technology, such as the PDA and the MS Office Suite, which can help to organize medical data, coding & billing, and personal scheduling to allow the surgeon to provide better health care to their patients. Finally, because both surgeons and patients are using the Internet in greater numbers each year for medical information, this course addresses methods for evaluating medical web sites as well as the identifying the type of information participants might include on their own web sites to better serve their patients.
Objectives:
At the completion of the lecture series the participant should be able to:
Recognize the basic structure of Internet in terms of access. Identify a number of websites where the physicians can access accurate information.
Identify a number of web sites where the physicians can access the information patients seek for surgical care.
Understand the basic mechanisms by which physicians can setup their own web presence.
Identify the features of a personal digital assistant (PDA) and medically related software available.
Identify uses for a PDA that assist the surgeon
a) to organize personal scheduling
b) assist in surgical coding and billing
c) collect perioperative information for research and quality assurance databaseUnderstand the nature of how a PDA can be used in a wireless medical environment to send and receive data.
Learn the basics of Digital Photography that assist the surgeon in recording information acquired in the operating room, inpatient or outpatient settings for uses as visual aides in presentations or record keeping.
Understand the key features of format, compression storage, and editing of photographs.
Understand the key feature of digital video as it applies to capturing, editing, displaying, trans-coding and compressing scenes from the operating room environment for use in presentations, educational material, and webstreaming.
